This year’s theme for Science Week is Climate Action.  Thanks to the effort of Ms. Hamill and Ms. Mc Nulty for putting together a wonderful selection of experiments for all classes.  Our children are excited and looking forward to the week of fun experiments.

We will have representatives from 6th classes pupils informing the school of amazing scientific facts over the intercom each day.

A special thanks to Ms Hamill and her class for assisting 3rd and 4th class with their science experiments this week.

The pupils of St. Malachy’s have elected the new student council this school term.  The student council is an important forum for the children to raise awareness and bring forward any new ideas or suggestions on how we can make improvements to our school and the community.  The pupils are as follows:

We are extremely proud to have received our second green flag for water conservation.  Thanks to all the children and teachers  for participating in this very important project and a special thanks to Ms. Carmichael and the green school committee for spreading the message throughout the school about the importance of water conversation.  

We welcomed three special guests to our school to join in our celebration of raising our 2nd green flag, The Lord Mayor of Dublin – Mr. Paul Auliffe, a local Finglas man, Green Councellor – Caroline Conroy and Orla from Crann Ireland.

With the help of Orla and Mr. Mc Auliffe, we planted an oak tree to mark this special occasion.  We named the tree “Deirdre” after a valued and local long serving member of our staff.

A special thanks to Niall from Glanmore for providing our hydro flasks – a sturdy long lasting water bottle which has replaced plastic bottles in our school.

Welcome back to all our children in St. Malachy’s we hope you had a wonderful summer.  We are delighted to welcome four new staff members to our staff:

We were delighted to welcome the crew from Ireland AM, Virgin Media One to our school this week as part of Science Week.

A number of children from 4th, 5th and 6th classes, representatives from our parents committee, Orla from Easy Treesie and our Lord Mayor – Paul Mc Auliffe planted tree saplings in our local park, Tolka Valley Park.  Adam Sheehan and Sophia Lebedeva from 5th class were interviewed by Brianna from Ireland AM on the importance of trees for our environment and for the sustainability of our planet.

We were then joined by Phil Smyth, a physicist of Engineering, to carry out two experiments relating to climate change and global warming.  The boys and girls really enjoyed helping Phil carry out his experiments and they learned about the harmful effects carbon dioxide and rising temperatures in our seas and oceans are having on our planet.

There was great excitement in St. Malachy’s on Tuesday and it was a great start of an fun week planned for Science Week.

We were extremely excited to welcome Sam Maguire to our school on the 4th of December and who better to present it other than local GAA hero Jason Sherlock.  Jason told us that he achieved his goals through hard work, focus and commitment.  We appreciate the time Jason took out of his day to talk to us not only about sport, but about anti-bullying.  We were extremely proud to greet “Jayo” with the biggest St. Malachy’s cheer!

Congratulations to the winners of the annual Anti-Bullying  art competition.  This year’s theme was “Change starts with us”.  The standard was very high this year, the boys and girls put great effort into their art work and represented the theme meaningfully in their art.

The Minister of Education, Joe Mc Hugh visited the school on Thursday morning.  He was there to announce the provision of €1 million funding to 100 DEIS schools through a new book scheme initiative, which is aimed at reducing the cost of books.

Better Finglas and Tusla Family Support Teams are holding monthly Family Drop In Clinics on Monday mornings from 10.00am – 12pm in St Helenas Family Resource Centre on St Helena’s Road, Finglas, Dublin 11, starting Monday 24^th February

This is a service that is open to all parents or guardians who are experiencing any type of issue or problem in the family home. This is a safe and confidential space to seek support, advice and guidance on issues arising in your everyday life. Issues can include, challenging behaviours, parental anxiety, educational concerns, setting rules, crèche availability etc.

Staff will also be there to support filling out any applications or documents that people may have difficulty with.
