Literacy week

We were very busy in St Malachys this week for literacy week. Every class took 15 minutes every day to ” drop everything and read” ( D.E.A.R time) – including the teachers.

As well as this, two children from every class recited a poem or short story, as gaeilge or in English, over the intercom each day of literacy week.

We also had a junior and senior spelling bee competition, congratulations to Kyle Henderson from 4th class for winning the junior spelling bee and Alex Zgardan from 6th class for coming 1st place in the senior competition.

Each class took part in a handwriting competition, it was a very close competition as the standard of excellent handwriting in the school is very high. Congratulations to Michael Galka in 5th class for winning the senior competition and to Alan Nolan in 3rd class for winning the junior competition.

We were also honoured to welcome a local poet and grandfather to two of the pupils in the school, Liam Johnson to the school. He recited two of his poems and short story, as well as listening to some of room 12’s short stories. Liam and his grandchildren, Louise Shannon and Robert Sharkey recited Liam’s poem “Clickety Clack” over the intercom to the rest of the school.
